“Relevant at all times” is how the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once described Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, and when Rabbi Alexander was fortunate to spend part of her sabbatical this past summer in Heschel’s personal archive at Duke University this was exactly what she discovered to be true. Relevant to social justice issues in the news today, ranging from reproductive justice to gun control to prison reform. Relevant to discussions of what constitutes appropriate and holy activism for religious individuals and leaders. Relevant to anyone looking to learn lessons from the 1960’s and early 1970’s which we might meaningfully apply today – which is exactly what Rabbi Alexander sought to do with her research fellowship, and looks forward to being able to share with you through a survey of the fascinating artifacts she found.
