Beth Elohim Synagogue has a very unique history. Jews arrived in the historic town of Georgetown, SC in the mid 1700s and by 1800 they were a small but important portion of the population. Although proportionally only 10% of the population, the Jews held a disproportionate large role in civic life. There have been six Jewish mayors of the city. In 1772, the Jewish community established a Jewish cemetery, although they did not form their own formal synagogue until 1904. Charleston’s Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim synagogue played an integral role in Georgetown’s congregation, and they are even considered to be KKBE’s sister congregation.
